Madre miya, si mi muero Mother, if I die,
Hazanim no kero yo, I don’t want any Cantors,
Si non doze mansevikos But instead, twelve young men
Adelantre l’mi aron; Walking before my coffin;
Halva sheker ola. Halvah and sugar.
Madre miya, si mi muero, Mother, if I die,
Ke me yevan davagar, Let them carry me around
Ke veyan ke so muchachika; So they’ll see I’m a young girl,
Ke se metan a yorar. Then they will cry.
Halva sheker ola. Halvah and sugar.

Description

Yet another setting of traditional lyrics by Flory Jagoda, this is the story of a heartbroken young girl who asks that, should she die, 12 strong young men will carry her casket so they can see what they missed by not courting her. Halva is sesame candy, and sheker is Turkish for sugar.
